Speaking of tourism in India, the first thing that comes in people's mind is the Taj Mahal. Built entirely by superior quality marble stones, the bright looking Taj Mahal is indeed the greatest tourist attraction of India. Located in the Northern part of the country, the Taj Mahal of Agra is one of the greatest architectural creations not in the country but in entire world and is also one of the seven wonders of the world. Built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in the memory of his wife, Mumtaz, Taj Mahal is actually a magnificent monument that attracts people from all corners of the globe for its breathtaking scenic beauty. The architecture of Taj Mahal is unique not only in that sense that it has been created beautifully, but it is also a specimen of combination of Mughal art and architecture and Italian, Persian and traditional Muslim art. The great sense of art among the Mughals and the Muslim people is evident from all parts of Taj Mahal, specially the tomb.

As it was built in the memory of Mumtaz, the tomb is the main focus of Taj Mahal. Built with white marbles, the tomb in Taj Mahal is standing on a square plinth that consists a symmetrical building which includes an arch-shaped doorway topped by a dome and an iwan. Like many other tombs, the tomb in Taj Mahal is also a great specimen of Persian architecture. The base of of the tomb in Taj Mahal has got a multi-chambered structure. The base is actually a cube and is around 55 meter on its four sides. The tomb also includes a massive pishtaq and an arch-shaped balcony. You would find the main cenotaphs of Mumtaz and Shah Jahan in side the main chamber of the tombs and their graves are located in its lower level.
The large marble dome that surmounts the tomb, is also one of the most attractive features of Taj Mahal. The large dome has got a circumference of 35 meters and has been placed on a cylindrical drum which is around seven meters in height. At the top of the dome, which is often called as onion dome, you would find beautiful lotus design.
