Diwan-i-Am |
Among the numerous tourist locations in Agra, one of the most significant tourist destinations of the country, the Diwan-i-Am is one. If you have to witness a grandeur structure made up of marble, then you must visit this scintillating structure. This piece of art is the reflection of Shah Jehan’s immense love and adoration for marbles. The Diwan-i-Am is also referred to as the Hall of Public Audience. It was built basically for the emperors to address the general masses as well as the aristocratic people. Diwan-i-Am is located in close proximity to the Machchhi Bhawan and was founded in between 1631-1640.
The enormous structure is housed on several beautifully carved pillars. 201' by 67' is the actual size of the huge assembly hall. There are two grand gateways, made of red sandstone, to this primary hall of Diwan-i-Am of Agra. After the entire structure was constructed in red sandstone, it was plastered with marble at a later stage. The frontal portion of Diwan-i-Am of Agra comprises an arcade, which is further decorated with nine arches. On each side of this spectacular structure there are 9 beautifully carved arches, adorning it and enhancing its beauty further.

The rectangular chamber from where the ruler used to address the masses was extraordinarily decorated and designed. It’s one of the most beautiful portions of the Diwan-i-A. The ‘jharokha’ is beautifully decorated with precious stones and arches and is referred to as the ‘Takht-i-Murassa’ (the Throne Room). On either side of the emperor’s chambers there are apartments for the royal ladies to sit and watch the ceremonials happening in the Diwan-i-Am. ‘Baithak’ is the name allotted to the marble dias, located just under the chamber, and is the seat for the Wazir. There were separate balustrades in the Diwan-i-Am of Agra for the different class of aristocrats.
