Akbar’s Tomb in Sikandra is magnificent and majestic. The tomb started by Akbar and completed by his son Jehangir. It was built during the 16th and 17th century. Akbar became the emperor of the Mughal kingdom after the demise of Humayun. He was only 14 years old when he was crowned the emperor. His tender age did not stop him from building and expanding the empire. The empire expanded greatly during the times of Akbar. He was a good administrator due to which he could expand his reign. No one could surpass Akbar in his role as a king. His success lied in his tolerance towards all religions. Architecture too flourished during the times of Akbar's rule. He was a great patron art and literature. Akbar’s Tomb in Sikandra has Islamic, Persian and local influences. The entire tomb has intricately designed arches, pillars, domes and gateways.
Akbar’s Tomb in Sikandra was built with marbles and stones. There are Islamic inscriptions all round the premise. The design of the tomb are geometric. The designs on the marble are examples of excellent craftsmanship. The architecture of Akbar's time is the blend of many schools of architecture that has given each of the buildings its uniqueness. Akbar's son Jehangir built a beautifully carved garden around the monument. It has paths that lead to various sections of the garden. The tomb of Akbar has been built in the tier system and the gardens lead to the actual tomb. The place where Akbar has been laid to rest has simple designs. There are five levels of the building and the grave is at the basement. To reach Akbar's grave, there is a portico which has paintings in gold, blue and green of Persian inscriptions.
