Fatehpur Sikri is a city built by the Mughal Emperor Akbar and has been declared as the world heritage site by UNESCO. Fatehpur Sikri is now located in Uttar Pradesh and its proximity to Agra gives its tourist footfalls an additional boost. Fatehpur Sikri is a city that was built to serve as the capital of the emperor. Akabr built the city to honor Salim Chishti who was a Sufi saint. The city is full of beautifully designed buildings. It has palaces, forts, courts, mosques and tombs. This beautifully planned city was designed by Akbar and has the influence of Persian and local style embodied in the designs of the building. It was completed in the 16th century but was abandoned due to scarcity of water in the region.
Fatehpur Sikri has many important buildings in its premises that was built under the supervision of Emperor Akbar. The best architects were employed to construct the city buildings. The Fatehpur Sikri houses the famous Diwan – i – Aam and the Diwan – i – Khas where Akbar held meetings with the general public and his ministers. Anyone could get their problem solved in these meetings. The Buland Darwaza that is a magnificent gateway leading to the Jama Masjid has intricate designs etched on it. The Jama Masjid is a place where still prayers are held. The magnificence of the mosque can only be felt by visiting it.

Akbar took special care of his wife Jodha Bai. Her palace has influences of Gujarati architecture and was built to give maximum privacy . There are numerous rooms and beautiful gardens. Akbar's favorite minister Birbal has his palace in Fatehpur Sikri. The Pachisi Court in Fatehpur Sikri is a huge board game that was played by real humans as pawns. The tomb of the Sufi saint Salim Chisti is in the courtyard of the Jama Masjid. The Panch Mahal and Sunehra Makan too are intricately built. Fatehpur Sikri is open all days and the entry fee for Indians is Rs.50 and for other nationalities is Rs.485.
