Itmad-ud-Tomb |
Itmad-ud-Tomb has the backdrop of the beautiful river Yamuna. It was built under the supervision of the powerful Mughal queen Nurjahan. The legend of Itmad-ud-Daulah is very fascinating. It is a classic case of reversal of fortune. Itmad-ud-Daulah was known as Mirza Ghiyas – ud – Din or merely as Ghiyas Beg. Mirza Ghiyas – ud – Din was a merchant from Persia. He was not much successful as a merchant. He once came to India for business, when his wife gave birth to a girl who later grew up to be Nurjahan. Ghiyas Beg and his wife was so poor that they had decided to abandon the girl. However they could not and by luck they reached the Emperor Akbar's court. Mirza Ghiyas – ud – Din went on to become the minister in the court and later the prime minister under the rule of Jahangir. It was then that he was named Itmad-ud-Daulah. After he passed away, his daughter who was the queen of Jehangir, made the monument.
