Qutub Minar in Delhi |
Qutub Minar in Delhi is one of the finest specimens of Indo Islamic architecture. Constructed in 1199 by Qutub-ud-din Aibak, Qutub Minar in Delhi is still the tallest stone structure in India. The entire minar is 72.5 m in height. Historians are of the opinion that the Qutub Minar in Delhi was built as a victory tower, in the memory of Qutub-ud-din's historic win. Others are of the opinion that the stone structure was deliberately built next to the mosque. Construction began in 1199 but it took nearly two decades before Qutub Minar in Delhi could finally be completed. Finally it was Iltutmish, Aibak's son-in-law who completed the structure. Just behind the Qutub Minar in Delhi lies the Tomb of Jamali Kamali. Tourists to Delhi should also not forget to visit the Zafar Mahal in Mehrauli and the tomb of Adham Khan, if they visit Qutub Minar in Delhi. Along with these tombs Qutub Minar in Delhi is indeed one of the most prominent landmarks of Delhi. The walls of the structure are a proof of Indo Islamic architecture. There are beautiful carvings on the walls of the Qutub Minar in Delhi. Besides, one can also spot verses inscribed on the walls from the holy Koran.

Beside the legend of Qutub-ud-din Aibak another popular legend claims that Qutub Minar in Delhi was built by the Rajput king Prithwiraj Chauhan. If legend is to be believed, Prithwiraj Chauhan constructed the Qutub Minar in Delhi so that his daughter could peep over into the adjacent Yamuna River. History ,however, gives all the credit to Qutub- ud-din Aibak. Recently the Geological Survey of India has undertaken a massive reconstruction program for the structure. Climbing up to the top floor to catch a glimpse of the Delhi landscape from the minar is currently forbidden.
