The son of Mughal Emperor Jahangir was actually named Prince Khurram, but his courage and skills in the war front made Jahangir give him the title of Shah Jahan or the King of the world. At a young age, it is believed, his eyes fell on a girl on the streets of Agra whose beauty was incomparable and fell in love with her. She was Arjumand Bano Begum, whom the prince went on to marry after a few years and named her Mumtaz Mahal or the chosen one of the palace. From here began the love story of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal which was to become one of the greatest stories in the world, to be remembered for centuries after their death. Mumtaz Mahal always preferred accompanying Shah Jahan in all his campaigns and during one of these campaigns, while giving birth to their fourteenth child, she breathed her last and the emperor was devastated.
Thereafter, he decided to build a mausoleum for his wife that will have a beauty and structure found no where else in the world and would symbolize their love. With the help of two great architects and huge work force, Taj Mahal was given shape, its white marble and the exquisite art work reflecting the beauty of the soul that rested within and the purity of the love between the two great lovers. Soon after, the emperor was kept imprisoned by his son, but even from his room in the Agra Fort, he could not do away with the thoughts of his beloved wife and looked upon the Taj from afar. After his death, he too was buried within the mausoleum, beside his wife and therefore became united in death. Even today, the visitors to the Taj Mahal can feel the essence of the love story of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal that wraps the entire edifice, even after the passage of hundreds of years.
