As the rest of India celebrates the coming of the season, Agra too reveals its own face of festivity and what the events culminates into is called the Taj Mahotsava – a true display of culture belonging to a land that is the proud home of the splendorous Taj Mahal. Thousands of people from across the globe join in the celebrations, to add to the color, sights and sounds of the place. Agra during the 10-days of Taj Mahotsava takes on a frenzied look, where all barriers are broken, and the past is brought in and mingled with the present and future, creating a mood of sheer enjoyment and at the same time recognition of the rich culture of the land, rendered by its extremely talented locals.
Held in the month of February every year, Taj Mahotsava is organized by the Uttar Pradesh Tourism in Shilpgram, located in the vicinity of the Taj Mahal. It is a wonderful attempt to commemorate and salute the extraordinary skills and talents of the masters and exponents of the various categories of art, music and cuisine that have given the state such extraordinary dimensions. The ceremonies begin with the procession that reflects the pomp of celebrations in the Mughal era. This is followed by the various programs in music and art, where tourists as well as the locals take part. Exhibitions are held of wood-work, marble work, intricate patterns on brass and metal wares, pottery, silk garments, handicrafts and handmade carpets from the various parts of the state. This is accompanied by a food festival were you can get to taste some of the most delectable of the local delicacies as well as those from other parts of the nation. To add to the growing excitement, musical and classical performances are held from different states and regions that recreate the aura of the past and give all an element of happiness to carry on with them to the future.
